The tournament
started in 1998 as a reason to keep fit and a good way to socialise. Only 7
teams took part in the first year and there were no real prizes (except for
bubbly for the winners).
For the
following two years, a language company decided to invest into the
tournament and make it much more impressive. A total of 14 teams took part
in 1999 and then 12 in 2000 and we also moved to our current home at the
school on sklenarova. A huge piece of silverware was bought for the
victors, bubbly and even individual medals were awarded for the elite three
teams .
In 2001, the
cup was renamed after the organiser's father-in-law who passed away on 31
August 2001. The tournament
format was also changed and now only 10 teams compete, 2 of which are eliminated after the
group rounds and then the knock-out stage begins. Quarter-finals,
semi-finals and then a final and third place matches conclude the
tournament.
